Send your first email campaign

Level: BeginnerLast updated:

Goal

Send a first campaign to a small test list, then check what happened. Plan about 45 minutes, not counting the time your DNS changes need to spread.

What you need

  • A verified sending domain. If you have none, do Set up a bulk email domain first.
  • A relation selected under Current Account in the sidebar. A new account starts with one, named after your company.
  • Two or three addresses you can read, such as your own and a colleague's. Do not use real customers for a first test.

Steps

  1. Open Settings -> Email Integration -> Email & Domain Setup. Check that your domain says Verified.
  2. Open Mailings and the Mailing list tab. Click +, change Listname to "First campaign test" and click Save Mailinglist.
  3. Open Upload New. Enter an Email and a Firstname, then click Add Recipient. Repeat for each test address. For files and CRM imports, see Mailing lists and segments.
  4. Open the Template Editor tab and click Blank Template. Fill in Subject Line and Preview Text. A blank template starts with one section. Drag a Text block, a Button block and a Footer block from Tools into it. In the text, write Hello %recipient_firstname%, followed by your message.
  5. Click Preview Mail, then Save and name the template.
  6. Open the Campaigns tab and click AI campaign setup. Describe the campaign in a sentence or two and click Generate plan, then Create campaign. The Campaigns tab has no other way to start a campaign.
  7. Select the new campaign in the list. In Mailing list, remove the generated list by clicking its x, then add "First campaign test". The generated list is built from your CRM, so check this before you schedule anything.
  8. If the plan created follow-up mailings, delete them for this first test. Open the dots menu on each follow-up and click Delete.
  9. On the first mailing, open the dots menu and click Edit. Click Show templates, pick your template, then click Hide templates. Set From Name, set Send from to an address on your verified domain, and check Subject. Choose a Send date and Send time a few minutes from now, and the right Timezone. Click Save.
  10. Open the dots menu again and click Schedule. You see "Mailing Scheduled". If a message such as From field missing appears, fix that field and try again.

Enydea checks for due mailings every minute. Your campaign goes out at the time you set.

Check your work

  1. Your test addresses receive the email. Look in spam folders too. Check the greeting, the button link and the footer.
  2. A notification says "Campaign mailing ... sent to N recipients". N should match the number of addresses in your list. In the campaign, set Show mails to Send mails: your mailing is listed there, and Edit and Delete are greyed out.
  3. Add the Dashboard widget Add mailing data to see Delivered, Opened and Clicked counts.

A campaign called Autumn valve promotion with its mailing list

A finished campaign: name, mailing list and the mail to send.

Warning: Do not click the unsubscribe link in a test mail unless you mean it. It marks that address as unsubscribed on every list in your company.

Tip: If nothing arrives and N is 0 (or no notification appears), the domain in Send from was probably not verified when the mailing went out. A sent mailing cannot be edited. Fix the domain, click the large + to add a new mailing to the campaign, and schedule that one.
